Recent years have seen Mississippi lawmakers viciously attack public schools by passing legislation that expands the ability of charter schools to open, consolidating school districts, and punishing already underserved school districts by changing school rating regulations mid-year before schools can catch up. It is no coincidence that data shows that school districts with a black student population of more than 60% consistently hold ‘D’ and ‘F’ ratings. The superintendents of these districts have joined to create MABSE, the Mississippi Alliance of Black School Educators, and have focused their collective efforts on thwarting the tide of anti-public education sentiment.
One Voice works to assist, train, and empower these school leaders by educating them on best practices and policy changes while offering safe spaces for cross district collaboration. Additionally, part of the educational process involves providing these leaders with new and innovative ideas for improving student academic outcomes through meaningful partnerships with community stakeholders.
