One Voice recently joined the State Priorities Partnership (SPP), a network of more than 40 independent, nonprofit research and policy organizations that seek to reduce inequality and fight poverty through fiscal policy analysis. We support budget and tax policies that regardless of color or class promote economic growth, adequately fund the government’s services and programs, and reduce poverty. The goal of our fiscal policy work is to use credible, reliable evidence and analysis to advance state policy around issues related to the state’s budget and tax systems.
Municipal courts in Mississippi play an integral role in the state’s criminal legal system because it is the court tasked with maintaining public safety and ensuring that city and town laws are followed. Increasingly, however, municipal courts use and rely on the revenue collected from fines and fees penalties to help support local and state budgets. And although the municipal courts’ reliance on fines and fees revenue is relatively small in Mississippi, its impact is far- reaching.
