School to Prison Pipeline

One Voice works within a coalition of parents, students, educators, policy makers, and organizations who have joined to derail the school to prison pipeline in Mississippi through training, policy advocacy at the local and state levels, and technical assistance to families and schools.

Desegregation Orders

Mississippi Alliance of Black School Educators

Data shows that school districts with a black student population of more than 60% consistently hold ‘D’ and ‘F’ ratings. The superintendents of these districts have joined to create MABSE, the Mississippi Alliance of Black School Educators, and have focused their collective efforts on thwarting the tide of anti-public education sentiment.

Initiative 42

Recognizing the need to change the way education advocates across the state address the delivery of free public education for all children, One Voice began to explore opportunities for a nontraditional, coalition-based campaign to increase quality education.

Achievement School Districts

The Achievement School District (ASD), established by Miss. Code Ann. §37-17-17, authorizes the Mississippi Board of Education to takeover schools and school districts deemed to be failing. State takeovers have occurred in the past, but this law establishes a state-wide district run by a state-appointed Superintendent.

Parent Leadership Institute

The Parent Leadership Institute (PLI) is an advocacy and engagement program that trains parents and communities to advocate for children in their local schools. The PLI is structured help parents understand the public education system, the policies enacted by the district, the state data and ways that engaged and informed parents can have impact.
