Derek Chauvin’s Guilty Verdict is Only the Beginning

For centuries, we have experienced collective trauma and tragedy which has birthed a collective consciousness, and today we can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Today, a jury has found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all charges connected to the murder of George Floyd.

Upon hearing this verdict, we feel hopeful knowing that George Floyd’s murderer has been brought to justice. We are hopeful that this verdict is a catalyst for change throughout our country. We know that this one verdict is not the single answer to the deep-rooted systemic racism plaguing our country. But it could be the spark that ignites the torch of justice as we hold police accountable and create space for true reform.

This verdict is the first step on a long journey ahead.
