Higher education is facing major policy shifts, including the rising cost of college, the declining buying power of Pell Grants, and growing attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In Mississippi, these efforts are especially urgent due to the new law, HB 1193, which bans most diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and funding in public schools and universities. The law is a direct attempt to silence conversations about race, gender, and equity on campus. To support students, staff, and faculty in navigating these changes, Meghan, a One Voice intern this past summer, created a resource guide with practical tips to stay informed, educated, and safe.
The guide is designed to help students understand the law, its impact, and strategies to navigate diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
My name is Meghan Curry. I am a native of Indianola, MS, and a 2025 graduate of the University of Mississippi, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Public Health and Health Sciences. I currently serve as a Summer 2025 HWLMI intern. Examining DEI measures in higher education is essential. As someone who has actively engaged in efforts related to DEI pushback and is proactive in taking a stance, I believe that advocacy begins with education. We must remain informed, vigilant, and protective, not only of ourselves but also of our peers. This DEI toolkit provides a brief overview of key measures to help achieve that.
